Ideally, we had wanted to wait until we were at the last step of our adoption before sharing of our financial need to bring our sons home. But, America World recommended that we begin now so I quote “ Just a reminder that you will need to pay all your outstanding fees in order to be cleared for travel so you want to be sure to have the funds by the time you get I600 approval from USCIS. “ We also need to know how much to ask for to loan from the Abba Fund if our funds are not raised in time. We surely do not want to delay anything we can control, since there is so much we cannot control! Please know the range for the boys coming home could be anywhere from 8 weeks to 5 months, Lord willing , not longer than that.
So, here we go. There is not one aspect of this adoption that has not been frustrating. Until now the financial aspect has seemed to go well. Ron is teaching an extra hour for the fourth year in a row so that we can qualify to adopt four boys on paper. We have trac phones and cell phone by wifi only, no cable, shop at Aldi, Sam’s, and utilize yard sales and Salvation Army. We had enough saved away after last year to pay the end costs and then found out we needed a new roof and an egress window along with putting in a practical unfinished bathroom in the basement for Josh and Robenson.
It is very humbling to have to ask for help. It is not fun and does not feel particularly wonderful to be honest. It is hard to know deep in your heart that God has called you to something that is in reality over your head in every way possible. We have been so blessed by this community, our family, our friends, and fellow believers in their generosity in this call. The Lord has blessed us with all of you along with numerous grants and fundraising efforts. So, it is with a quiet prayer that we share with you our need in response to many of you asking us to. Here is the breakdown:
Final fees to America World: $202.70
Cost for final stay at the Orphanage: $1175.00
Final fees for Orphanage (medicals, visas etc. For each son): $2182.30
Estimate of our flight to and from Haiti: $1400.00
Estimate of our sons’ flight home from Haiti: $2800.00
Less Gift of Adoption Fund Grant (but can only be used once that is the
last $1500. we owe and our travel date is set): -$1500.00
Less money already sent to Lifesong by donors: -$1000.00
Total needed to bring sons home: =$5259.70
I realize that it seems like people prefer online giving where they can see the amount that is being raised. I will try to update our fund raised amount each day if a donation is received. It is best for us to go through Lifesong as then the donor’s gift is tax deductible. If the amount we raise were to go over the amount above we can use $2671.04 over the amount for post adoption fees. These are fees that we would pay to our social worker for required reports for each son at 6m, 12m, 18m and 2yrs. Life song is willing to pay that bill in advance if we were to raise that amount. So, we could technically raise $7930.74 towards Lifesong and still be able to utilize it all. Money can be given to Lifesong in two ways:
- Write a check: Please make checks payable to “Lifesong for Orphans.” In the memo, note “Schaffner #4451” to assure it goes to the right account. Please mail to: Lifesong for Orphans, PO Box 40, Gridley, IL. 61744. Lifesong has been blessed with a partner that underwrites all U.S. administrative and fund-raising costs (TMG Foundation and other partners). This means 100% of your donation will go directly to the adoption. Lifesong is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and your gift is tax deductible.
- The other way is to give online using this link: https://www.lifesongfororphans.org/give/donate/ and direct your donation to adoption, enter our family account #4451, and our family name: Schaffner Family. This method is also tax deductible, but a small fee will be charged to give online.
Please only give if the Lord is asking you to give. No gift is too small as we learned from our eleven campaign. We must trust in Him to provide for this call. Thanks so much for your prayers, notes of encouragement and thoughts of our family during this time.
Humbled by His Grace,
Ron, Michelle, Luke, Abi, Kaiti, Josh, Robenson, Anna, Samson, Jimmy, Ally, Ricardo, and Ella
